Set on a large sheltered bay backed by mountains, Fethiye is a bustling market town, port and holiday resort. Despite recent development, it is still very Turkish in character. A smart palm-lined promenade borders the harbour, which is shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. In the old town behind, a maze of cobbled streets contains an abundance of colourful shops, bars and restaurants. Look out for new or antique carpets, leather goods, spices, genuine designer clothes, Turkish Delight and jewellery. Tuesday is market day when farmers from the outlying areas arrive with a staggering array of fresh produce. Or you can take a boat to the market in the fishing village of Göçek, which takes place every Sunday.

Fethiye is home to several remarkable ancient sites. The most conspicuous are the rock tombs dating from the fourth century BC carved in the hillside above the town. It’s quite a climb but well worthwhile, if only for the views - especially at sunset. If you follow the road round to the amphitheatre, you will come upon the crumbling remains of a medieval castle built by the Knights of St John.
